Modding – Advice

Advice that will help you modify GTA.
1. Never install mods with the game running.
2. Try and install all mods manually. I don’t recommend the use of tools that install them automatically. If you read the readme that you downloaded along with the mod, you’ll notice there are instructions written inside. After a few mods installed manually, you’ll see it’s not that hard.
3. I don’t recommend modifying/replacing the file called main.scm.
4. Always write down what exactly each new file does. For example, let’s say you installed a mod for GTA SA that adds a new bridge in Dillimore. The files that need replacing are countN2.ide and countN2.ipl. Replace them and then write in a Text Document the following line: ” countN2.ide, countN2.ipl = Dillimore bridge”.
5. Never install a mod until you see at least one in-game picture. Otherwise, install it at your own risk.
6. Before modifying the game, make sure the game’s folder and all its contents are not Read-only.
7. Don’t use tools that you don’t know exactly how to use. Otherwise, use them at your own risk.
8. Before adding one or more files to gta3.img (or gta_int.img), make sure you’ve deleted the original files.
9. Do not attempt to modify GTA SA 2.0 because you won’t be able to.
10. Always keep backups of the original files.
11. When modifying a file with Notepad (or any other text editor), try not to leave any useless spaces at the begginning/end of lines.
12. After installing a mod, always test it immediately afterwards, before installing another.
13. It is not recommended to replace 2-door cars with 4-door cars and viceversa.
14. Always install one mod at a time. If the game stops working correctly, you’ll know exactly what mod’s causing it and which files need to be restored.
15. Never replace cars with motorcycles/bikes and viceversa.
16. Try to keep gta3.img under 1.30GB. This is only available for GTA San Andreas.
17. Never add the same file in both gta3.img and gta_int.img. This is only available for GTA San Andreas.
18. After installing a vehicle, write down the name of the replaced vehicle to avoid accidental replacement.
